We Support > Romanian Relief

Romanian Relief
Romanian Relief's mission is to prevent abandonment and the institutionalization of children and adults. For the past decade, they have been taking decisive action to protect and care for some of Romania’s most vulnerable kids and teenagers. They believe that every child in Romania has a right to free health care, education, care and support. These four key rights underpin the ethos and the team behind Romanian Relief.
The UN estimates that up to 8 million children around the world are living in institutions, the actual number is likely to be far higher. Children in institutional care are vulnerable to untold harm and risks of physical, sexual and emotional abuse. This leaves each child exposed to a system that can facilitate a vicious cycle of long-term damage and mental health problems. At least 4 out of 5 children in institutions have one or both parents alive.
Romanian Relief’s longest ongoing project involves their two Safe Homes. These were established in 2005 and provide 2 family homes for 12 abandoned children with special needs. Their main aim and vision for these homes is to provide each child with a stable family and rehabilitate them from the psychological damage they have suffered from being institutionalized.

Family & Individual Care
It is important to focus on the family as well as the individual, for change to be sustainable. Therefore, Romanian Relief have created an array of programs dedicated to supporting and preventing issues to break the cycle.

Free Health Care
Romanian Relief's medical clinic is on the outskirts of a large Roma community in a town called Tinca. In Tinca and surrounding villages there are around 3,000 registered and an estimated 1,500 unregistered Roma.
“Having witnessed firsthand the horrors of institutional care, I needed to find a solution to the problems of these children’s lives. Then I met the charity Romanian Relief, seeing the difference between their set up and others I had witnessed is so vast. Seeing the improvement in the children under their care is enough to bring hope and joy to anyone. I truly think that Romanian Relief is a model charity through which lives can be improved beyond measure”
